Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)

ILD is a disease of the lungs in which lesions form inside the lungs. This causes the lung tissue to become hard and difficult to spread and cause respiratory problems. ILD is caused by problems in a small layer of tissue in the lungs called the interstitium. Due to the small thickness of the tissue, it is relatively difficult to identify on X-ray, CT or MRI.

Types of Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD):

There are several types of this, some of which are temporary but some of which can be fatal. Here are some of them:

Asbestos: This disease is caused by the inhalation of asbestos – which is often released into the air during structural factors. Asbestos was a popular chemical of the 20th century that was used for construction purposes but its use was banned due to its dangerous effects. But it is still used in some less developed countries today, especially in military buildings.

Sarcidosis: Inflammatory and bacterial overgrowth of these cells in the lungs and other organs during the effects of the immune system on the germs. ۔

Interstitial pneumonia / pneumonia:

In this form of ILD, the interstitium of the penis is infected by bacteria, viruses or other germs. The infection is mostly caused by bacteria and especially affects people with scleroderma.

Symptoms:

۔ Respiratory problems: This symptom is most common in ILD disease and it becomes more severe over time and if left untreated it can be fatal.

Cough: This disease is mostly dry cough.

Weight Loss: ILD causes significant weight loss over time, which further exacerbates the disease.

Reasons:

There are a number of causes of ILD, the most common of which are:

Presence of asbestos in the breath

Misuse of bird meat, especially pigeons

Involvement of coal or silica particles in the breath of employees at construction sites, mines or various farms.

Some medications, such as Amy O’Donnell and Bluemycin

appraisal:

It can be diagnosed in the following ways:

High-resolution CT scan: It can easily see even the smallest layer of interstitium.

۔ Pulmonary Function Test: This gives us an idea of   the performance of the lungs and how much air our lungs can absorb.

It is equally important to know the type of ILD after diagnosis. For this purpose, a small tissue is removed from the lungs and examined under a microscope.

Treatment:

Antibiotics: If ILD is caused by a bacterium, it can be completely eradicated with antibiotics.

Oxygen: Inhaled oxygen protects against further damage.

Corticosteroids: They can be given by inhalation to reduce inflammation in the lungs.

۔ Lung Transplant: If ILD has reached its final stages, it can be resolved by lung transplant.

In short, the best way to prevent this is to keep the air around us clean, make sure to wear a mask when going out, avoid smoking, and use air purifiers. And if you suffer from it, don’t worry but prefer timely treatment wisely because it is a treatable disease.
