The fish oil has been demonstrated to reduce blood levels of LDL and VLDL cholesterol. LDL and VLDL are harmful forms of cholesterol. A triglyceride lowering effect is seen more consistently. Reduction in elevated blood levels of this fat is beneficial to cardiac health. The oils inhibit blood platelet ‘stickiness’ of the sort that contributes to formation of clots. In one long term (2 years) trial fish oil supplements reduced angina pains and diminished the need among these patients, for nitro-glycerin.
Overall, the fish oil appears to have a promising future in cardiovascular realm.
OMEGA-3 EPA FISH OIL LOWERS TOTAL CHOLESTEROL, LDL CHOLESTEROL AND TRIGLYCERIDES DRAMATICALLY. IT RAISES HDL CHOLESTEROL AND INHIBITS FORMATION. BESIDES IT OFFERS MANY OTHER SIDE BENEFITS
Even a triglyceride reading of a 100mg/dl, once thought to be normal, is now associated with twice the heart risk of a lower reading.”
“Fish oils very reliably lower the triglyceride threat. Success has been achieved with daily doses of as little as 1 gram each of EPA and DHA. At last count, more than 70 studies documented that Omega-3 oils can be counted to lower triglycerides by an average of 25-35%. Combine EPA and DHA with sharp curtailment of carbohydrates, and you can expect your triglycerides to plunge 75 percent.”
DR. S. S. HENDLER M.D, P.H.D. ALSO UPHOLDS SIDE BENEFITS ATTRIBUTED TO FISH OILS
- Lowers Blood Pressure – Hypertension is leading cause of heart attack and stroke. Fish oils, through the vasodilating effects of prostaglandins that it generates, open up the vessels so that blood can flow through them with less constriction and thereby it lowers blood pressure. In one study hypertensive patients were fed mackerel (supplying 2.2 grams of EPA daily) for two weeks. This resulted in significant reduction in their blood pressure. Several studies have now documented this effect. For now, it must be said that the fish oils appear to be useful in lowering blood pressure.
- Treatment of Arthritis – Recent investigation of this claim are yielding promising results. Fish oils have an anti-inflammatory effect, as demonstrated in both animal and human experiments. In one study rheumatoid arthritis patients were given fish oil supplements containing 1.8. grams of EPA daily. This seemed to stop further progression of the disease in those getting the EPA while progression continued in controls who received only placebo. Subsequent studies have also shown benefits.
- Treatment of Psoriasis – Helpful in Treatment of Psoriasis and other Skin Problems In a recent double-blind placebo-controlled study, 1.8 gram of EPA were shown to confer significant improvement in patients with psoriasis. There has been a well-controlled study reporting benefit from fish oils in the treatment of atopic dermatitis.
EPA/DHA FISH OIL IS SUPERIOR TO ASPIRIN IN PREVENTING HEART DISEASE
Dr. Shari Lieberman, Ph.D. in ‘The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book’ (p216) writes: “It is interesting to note that because aspirin thins the blood, it has been widely touted as a heart attack preventive. Yet several studies have suggested that fish oil whether consumed in fish or in fish oil supplement is superior to aspirin in preventing heart disease, and is not associated with ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia and other side effects that occur with aspirin use.”
“In studies that used both aspirin and fish oil, the combination was more effective than aspirin alone These factors, along with the fact that EPA appears to lower high levels of triglycerides, a risk factor in heart disease, makes fish oil a better and safer option in preventing cardio-vascular episodes in people at high risk.” “EPA also appears to be effective in the treatment of existing heart disease. There is evidence that fish oil lowers blood pressure and can’t reduce chest pain during exercise in people with angina.”
